Honourable mention: Apple Books (iBooks)

Apple Books publishes using the ePub format, but the main challenge in publishing to this platform is jumping through the hoops to do it. Formatting for Apple Books is tricky and you need to own a Mac if you want to do it yourself. Even then it’s challenging. If you wrote your book using the Apple Books Author software you stand a better chance of getting a decent result.

A while ago at Fundamental Changes we paid a freelancer to convert our books to Apple Books format. At the time it was 25 books and cost $1,000. However, to date, sales via Apple Books hover around 1.5% of total sales. Kindle is so dominant in the market that it is probably not worth your time, effort or money right now. In the future things may be different.

There are plenty of digital aggregators who will help you distribute your book to a wide variety of smaller online sellers. However, we recommend uploading directly to the larger retailers (Kindle, Nook, Kobo and Apple Books).
